                                                                                                                                              hristian Ricci has devoted a great part of his aca-

                                                                                                                                 ing corpus of Moroccan literature written in Catalan and

                                                                                                                                 Castilian. To date, Ricci has published an anthology of Mo-

                                                                                                                                 roccan Hispanophone writers (Letras Marruecas), a histo-

                                                                                                                                 riographical analysis of the evolution of Hispanophone cul-

                                                                                                                                 tural production since the Spanish colonization of Morocco


                                                                                                                                 (Literatura Periférica en castellano y catalán), as well as a se-

                                                                                                                                 ries of articles that have greatly helped frame this new field

                                                                                                                                 of study.

                                                                                                                                     His latest book represents an effort to approach this high-

                                                                                                                                 ly idiosyncratic literary corpus from the vantage point of

                                                                                                                                 postcolonial theory. If Literatura Periférica aimed to chron-

                                                                                                                                 icle the historical factors that informed Maghrebian His-


                                                                                                                                 panophone cultural production in the Spanish Protectorate

                                                                                                                                 as well as in present day Spain, Hay moros en la costa! tries

                                                                                                                                 to provide an overall interpretation of this eclectic body of

                                                                                                                                 texts. Ricci’s ultimate goal is certainly ambitious not only

                                                                                                                                 because of the wide historical period that his analyses en-

                                                                                                                                 compass, but also because the fragmented field of cultural

                                                                                                                                 production in which Maghrebian Hispanophone cultural
