he recent centennial of Carmen Laforet’s birth

T(2021) has generated a resurgence of critical atten-

tion on the Spanish writer’s corpus, and Ken Benson’s mul-

tiple studies are indeed important contributions to this

trend. In particular, his La subversion silente arguably situ-

ates Benson among the more important Laforetian schol-

         ars of the day.

This book is a rigorously researched and thoughtful ex-

amination of Laforet’s work that bolsters the Spanish au-

thor’s position within the canon of Spanish postwar litera-

ture. Departing from a traditional literary analysis, Benson

critiques the misogynistic and androcentric foundations of

Spain’s literary historiography while advocating for a re-

newed reading of Laforet’s poetics through the lens of mem-

         ory, trauma, and ideological resistance.

Following the book’s introduction are six thematically or-

ganized chapters, each addressing a different facet of La-

foret’s literature and its critical reception.
