In the final article, “The Travelling Texts of Local Con-
tent: Following Content Creation, Communication and
Dissemination via Internet Platforms in a Brazilian Favela,”
Tori Holmes studies the locality of internet content vis-à-
vis the virtual space through which the content moves. She
examines Terra Boa (Good Land), a text posted on a blog,
as a narrative both very locally embedded (in one of Rio
de Janeiro’s shantytown neighborhoods) and global in its
evolution as it circulates across the non-local internet. She
maintains that the new contexts in which the text is read
as well as the modifications the text undergoes give rise to
different interpretations in endless and unpredictable ways,
resulting in a conceptual challenge for authors and scholars.
As many of the essays in this volume argue, the role of
reader changes in the new media realm. I would like to com-
ment on my experience reading this volume. While elec-
tronically accessible, the publication mimics the analog feel
and aesthetic: each article is a separate PDF that looks like
a print journal article. Perhaps this is an intentional wink
towards the hybridity in the book’s title, perhaps it is the
press’s decision, but unfortunately, it does not take advan-
tage of other digital tools. I would have appreciated hyper-
links in the articles (e.g. to the endnotes at the bottom of
the articles or to the blogs or online works being analyzed).
It was tedious to have to scroll down twenty pages to read
an endnote and then scroll back to the body of the text;
and, it was frustrating to not be able to click on a link to a
online text, but rather have to Google it. Of course, reading
habits are highly subjective, and despite my own, HIOL is a
significant contribution to both Hispanic Studies and Dig-

ital Studies. Overlooking minor issues in the volume, such
as instances of awkward translations and minor typograph-
ical errors, the editors wholly accomplish their goals. The
specific textual analyses as well as the discussions of broad-
er trends in the creation and reading of digital texts, and
the changes in marketing and critical reception are all illu-
minating and extremely relevant to broader discussions in
digital studies. The introduction is a must-read for anyone
who is interested in a discussion of Hispanic Studies within
the Digital Humanities.

l noveno volumen de Hispanic Issues Online, Hy-
Ebrid Storyspaces: Redefining the Critical Enterprise in
Twenty-First Century Hispanic Literature (Espacios narrati-
vos híbridos: Una redefinición de la empresa crítica en la litera-
tura hispana del siglo veintiuno) es una adición importante al
Hispanismo gracias no sólo a su contenido, sino también a
su formato. Aunque no es la primera publicación que estu-
dia los nuevos medios de comunicación dentro del Hispa-
nismo, sí se encuentra entre las primeras que lo hace en un
formato de libre acceso. En otoño del 2007, un volumen
del Hispanic Review presagió el presente volumen de Hen-
seler y Castillo al publicar un número especial sobre “New
Media and Hispanic Studies” (“Los nuevos medios de co-
municación y los estudios hispánicos”). En la introducción
